Tips for Building in The Sims 4

Building in The Sims 4 can be a little challenging if you don't have much experience with it. While I don't claim to be any great expert at it, I have learned a few tips:

Use real buildings for inspiration.

I've often read of people using real buildings for ideas in the Sims, but I didn't realize how much it helps until I tried it myself. Unless you're an architect, bringing a building to life entirely from your head can be pretty tough. There are plenty of sources you can use for inspiration, from homes in your own neighborhood to real estate listings, like Zillow and Red Fin. Sure, you probably can't do a faithful recreation of real buildings, but you can try to get pretty close.

Follow creators who make houses in the style you enjoy.

Looking at the creations of other builders is a great way to get inspiration. You can browse the gallery in game or look around online. Tumblr is full of builders, and people frequently post build pictures on the The Sims Reddit. My own personal favorite builders include:

3. Keep practicing over and over again.

Understanding all the build tools in the game takes some practice. Sometimes, you'll end up making something hideous. It's happened to me more than I care to admit. Just keep trying over and over again and eventually you'll develop your own style and tricks. It is easy to get frustrated with building, so don't stress too much about it. Just remember to save frequently to avoid losing a work of art in progress!

Read and watch tutorials.

There is an endless wealth of tutorials out there for building in The Sims 4. Most of them are speed builds on Youtube, but you can also find some text tutorials. Here's a few useful ones: If you want to learn how to build a specific type of building, such as a flower shop, do a search on Youtube. You'll find plenty of videos to help give you some ideas.

Download Custom Content for Buildings

The Sims 4 custom content community is rich with objects that you can use in your buildings. A good place to start is with plasticbox on MTS. Plasticbox has liberated many of the plants from the game so that builders can use them freely. You can get the liberated plants from Get Together from here. I also believe that you can't have too many wall colors. I use these Behr walls frequently in my own buildings.

Have fun!

Don't stress yourself too much about making pretty buildings in the game. You can't expect to make an awesome house on the first try. If you can't quite get the building you want, take a break before you get frustrated. Work on small projects, such as a house, before trying to do bigger lots.
